The Rev. Bernard A. Maguire, S.J., papers consist of correspondence to and from Fr. Maguire, as well as manuscripts, notebooks, and printed material. Included are letters from John Cardinal McCloskey of New York and Martin John Spalding, Archbishop of Baltimore; notes taken from a diary kept by Maguire at Georgetown University during 1839-70; a book of notes made during a theology course taught at Georgetown by Giovanni Battista Pianciani, S.J.; the autograph manuscript of an address written for a commencement at St. John's Literary Institute; a 'Resolution [by Congress] providing for the distribution of the works of Thomas Jefferson' to Georgetown College, dated 1855; a letter concerning an order by the Holy See to abolish 'the service of women for domestic duties' in male religious houses; a pass issued by the Army of Northern Virginia in 1862 granting Maguire passage through Confederate lines; an 1853 indenture selling eight Georgetown College lots to the Rev. George A. J. Wilson; six items on Maguire's death and funeral, including an obituary from the 'College journal', vol. 14; a photo of Fr. Maguire; and an etching of Healy Hall.

Bernard A. Maguire was born at Edgeworth, Ireland, on Feb. 11, 1818. When he was six years of age his family immigrated to the United States and settled at Frederick, Md. His early education was at St. John's Literary Institute in Frederick. After graduating from St. John's he enrolled in Georgetown College, where he entered the Society of Jesus on Sept. 20, 1837.
